Fashionable Friday Featuring Züpers

I was specifically looking for zebra leggings when I came across Züpers. They are amazing in many ways.
If you remember your mom(or whoever sewed in your family) sewing old sock patches on the knees of your leggings, you will understand. They are stretchy spandex so skirts and dresses won't climb up them, they have heart shaped knee pads sewn inside that are removable, and my favorite little detail is a secret pocket near the bottom of one leg to put little pebbles in or perhaps a lucky coin or small toy horse.

Breyer's "Mini Whinnies" are barely 2 inches tall.

Many colors and patterns of leggings are available, from the zebra striped one shown to the basic blacks and pinks. Also available are under-the-skirt shorts which will make those tight-roping-over-the-playground moments a fashion statement, not an embarrassment!

The shoes in the picture are the new slip-on Bear*Lerinas in metallic pink with black trim. They have a suede leather sole that is so flexible you can roll the shoe up like sushi.

MoLi is an adorable line of shirts and accessories made in Austin. Most designs are for women but I scored this "I Believe" shirt after meeting the designers at a trade-show in Dallas. Whether you want to take it as a nod to fairy-tales or that 3 year old sentiment of "I believe I know what's best, actually!" is up to you!
I always find burn-out fabric interesting and airy, especially as roomy t-shirts. Burn-out is woven cotton & polyester, splashed with a fiber-etching solution. The cotton dissolves in splotches leaving the polyester in-tact albeit very thin and see-through, and any spots that didn't get wet stay solid.
I love it when designers go one step above screen-printing a design on front. This shirt also has some little butterflies on the back shoulder. That little detail really makes all the difference.

Mini Rodini makes some really sweet designs. I mean sweet like awesome, not cutesy. The red paint-splattered bubble skirt is fun. I don't have to worry about adding to that canvas though let's hope Vili doesn't get any ideas on how to decorate her other clothes.
This Godzilla dress is amazing. I am thinking about getting a size 146 and wearing it as a shirt :)
And then they have a robot dress....awesome. Many of the clothes are made with organic cotton. I got the skirt at Little Lunalu which not only was named "Best of the Web" in 2010 by InStyle Magazine, they donate %5 to the Lunalu foundation to provide charitable support for children around the globe.You'll notice that the places I shop and the brands I buy are often from people I know and build relationships with. Bear Feet is the same with its customers. Since we don't go through a rep at shows, buyers meet with people from the company directly. Renegade Craft Fair : Austin

The 2nd annual Renegade Craft Fair in Austin was a super kid-friendly event. My older (ok not that old, she's 4!) robot & cupcake obsessed daughter swooned over this Cupcake Monster pillow.

by Philidelphia based Cutesy but not Cutesy she picked one with orangey fluff and has been squeezing it around ever since.

Also, even though my daughters aren't yet of the wiggly-tooth age, I couldn't resist this adorable and intricate "Tooth Fairy Kit" by Sugarland TX's Paper+Twine

complete with fairy dust, a chart to keep track of the date and tooth that was lost, plus "business cards" for the "Toothfairy" to leave under the pillow! I am going to hide it in my closet for another few years where I'm sure the beautiful acid-free paper will hold up flawlessly.

It was a beautiful weekend and we all had a great time looking at the clever and creative handmade items for sale.

Fashionable Friday: Featuring Sailor Rose

Sailor Rose is a line of handmade in USA dresses in stunning fabrics. Not stunning like decorated in gold or anything gaudy, just very fine quality, breezy cotton wovens & knits in beautiful patterns like feathers, flowers, and my favorite, airplanes! The dresses evoke the currently very popular "Americana" style, and are made to last through several generations. Just like Bear Feet, they get character after being worn and improve with age.

Usually airplanes are on boy's clothes but these little airplanes are so sweet and dainty, they match the dress perfectly. Sailor Rose also makes headbands and women's tops, the perfect breezy summer top that I think I will have to order in the airplane print.

Notice the shoes too! We occasionally get requested to make a velcro shoes but just are not interested. Children as young as 2 (like the girl in the photo) love to buckle and tie. It provides great coordination practice. She is busy tying some silver tie sandals while wearing the flower power tie booties, which both come in sizes 5-16 and cost about $50.

Laman Blu is an extremely high-quality line of designer clothing made in LA. Designer Holli Gibson has extensive industry credits, including designing women's wear for Nordstroms & Neiman Marcus.
We hear "high quality" thrown around all the time and most people just equate it with a high price tag. People who make products for a living and see the whole process know exactly what it means to forgo shortcuts in order to make a better product.
The fabric in these clothes is just beautiful. It is strong and dense, the dye is all the way through. The peacocks are embroidered richly with many colors. The gold edge trim is perfectly applied and on the inside, everything is finished with facings and re-reinforced stitching; these clothes are made to last through generations. I had seen the clothing in photos many times before but to feel the fabric in person and see the small detail is different!
I was a little worried at first about how to wash such beautiful delicate-seeming clothes but it turns out everything is machine washable and dryable.
This style is a little low-key and girly for my daughter's super funky style, but when she saw the unusual peacocks and shiny gold trim she happily donned the outfit asking if she could "wear it all day!"
The shoes are part of the new tie-on collection from Bear Feet. At $48 these tie-on boots are super affordable and available in sizes 5-16 in every imaginable color.
They're completely unisex, too. The Chestnut brown is a classic look or perhaps metallic silver for little Mr. Trendsetter.

New Lunch Discovery

If there's one silly thing kids do, it's eat food that's shaped like something. A normal sandwich shape just won't cut it.

I was at a local hardware/homeware shop the other day and found this spectacular gem. You can find this Dyno-Bytes sandwich cutter (harhar) for about $5 online or $3 at Breed's in Austin.
Your kid will now eat any sandwich you make for lunch.

...And it cuts the crust off. Which is my "breakfast" as we're all rushing to get out the door!

On another note, it makes me a bit sad that Austin isn't much included in kid-friendly fashion blogs, so I will begin to make this more Austin-y, especially helping promote Austin kid's wear designers, shops, kid-friendly restaurants, parks, and events!

If you're not in Austin, I hope you'll come for a visit someday. Today was a beautiful 74 degrees.

Valentine's Day Special

Piggy Paint nail-polish is especially for kids and has a great backstory. Founder Melanie Hurley was painting her daughters' nails over a foam plate when a drop fell, bubbling up on the foam. Realizing that nail-polishes for women are full of dangerous chemicals, not to mention flamable, she started Piggy Paint with the goal of it being "natural as mud" hence the tagline! This color is "Sometimes Sweet" which you can buy alone or in the "LoveBug Hug" set. We have dozens of colors, including dragon tears (a pearly green) and a glow-in-the-dark topcoat. And of course, it's made in USA!

Misha Lulu is a brand known for its whimsical retro-modern touch. Super cute graphics are usually in store but this super simple dress caught Milena's eye as the perfect thing for Valentine's Day (also her Dimpa's* birthday) The big red bow on the waist is fun and I love the way the stripes go right down the sleeves.
The sequined heart pin is by Vinca (which by the way is coming out with a totally kid's collection this March)

And the socks! Surely you're wondering about the fabulous socks. White and red knee-high heart socks by PorkChop also made in USA. The slippers are the new slip-on ballerinas by Bear Feet

Last but not least, a funky pair of custom Bear Feet shoes that remind me of Dia De Los Muertos. With crystal eyes and an upturned heart-punch nose, these red-hot shoes are just that.

Here at Bear Feet we appreciate interesting, creatively made things. Often going to trade shows I envy the buyers as they peruse the aisles checking out all the new and amazing products! I know that it's often hard to find cool and beautiful stuff for the kiddos because there are just so many large department stores attempting to dictate the fashion world.

Kid's fashion is so fun and refreshing, it needs to be celebrated more often! So this blog isn't going to be just about Bear Feet, but about the whole kid's fashion world, especially sharing with you companies that have similar philosophy, plus innovative and creative style.

Fashionable Friday #6 Featuring Dagmar Daley, Dragonsnaps

One of our favorite places in the world is in Austin, TX on Anderson Lane, noted by a giant cute dragon on the outside. The name is DragonSnaps, and they carry a ton of made in USA brands. It is part of a store called Terra Toys, and they also have a shoe shop KidOShoe!
Dagmar Daley is one of the many beautiful brands they carry. The clothing exudes clean, classic, and dressy but totally wearable at the same time. Something really special that caught my eye about this dress is that the inside lining is a beautiful pansy pattern.

The shoes of course are Bear Feet Flower Power Mary Janes in silver, which looks great with anything and has that same clean dressy-casual appeal to it.

My Little Sunshine, a new shop that popped up in the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan, is due this week to receive some stock of very special Bear Feet. In addition to the metallic wing-tipped oxfords below, they are getting some beautiful bronze, yellow, chestnut, magenta and beech desert boots and some sunny yellow cool boots.We met with the owners at the NYC Children's Club trade show, visited the shop, and fell in love with their cute little space and airplane hair-cutting seat (they offer haircuts, toys, and clothing).
The feelings must have been mutual because they were really excited about customizing their order so they know no other store in the city has these shoes!

Our M2K Modern Jane has a little story behind it.
The last designer came up with the signature "curled toe" look back in the early 2000s to allow for extra toe room. But for some reason shop owners were hesitant to carry the look. Maybe it was TOO cool! We almost decided to discontinue the model.
But since opening our online shop this model has been one of our best sellers in all colors! We are starting a new type of post this week, the FASHIONABLE FRIDAY.
Featuring favorite brands of Bear Feet wearers and all their unique things.

Over the years we have come to realize the children that wear Bear Feet are as varied as our many colors. From girly to tom-boy, from punk-rock to classical, these children all have one thing in common - they like comfy flexible shoes!

A few months ago we were sent these pictures by a custom seamstress who frequently uses our shoes in her photoshoots. Though she has many different colors and styles of Bear Feet, the most versatile by far are the snap-on flower models.

Beary Janes ordered after June 1st will have snaps instead of buttons. You can choose from gold or silver. They are solid brass or nickle plated brass (adds a touch of class!!)

We started doing limited edition shoes with special materials last year and this was our most popular and the first to sell out. We still have it in pink, but no longer in the gold. This is special lambskin from Italy, printed with several colors and accented with glitter.

This style is still available only at Butterfly Kisses in Elkgrove, CA.

We will be posting new limited edition styles soon, including special 4th of July red white and blue woven toe shoes and flower power sandals!

We like pictures of our shoes in the real world on real customers so we recently came up with the idea of exchanging photographs of Bear Feet on your children for the shoes!

To be in the program, submit 5 of your best photographs or send a link to your photography portfolio. If you are selected, you may receive shoes in exchange for professional photographs.

A lot of you have asked us how to clean Bear Feet. We found a leather cleaner that not only cleans the top grain leather, it will clean suede and nubuck too!

Sometimes you might get a stubborn stain on the shoes that won't come off, maybe your child found a pen or permanent marker and decided to decorate. We found a wonderful ink remover to take care of all those small stubborn stains.
From waxy crayon and lipstick to magic marker, Ink Remover will take it off. The ink remover is for leather only!
